Professor
John Black is the Director of the Botany
Bay Studies Unit at the University of

At UNSW he is also Emeritus Professor
of Transport Engineering (Foundation Professor
1984 – 1999) and a Visiting Professor
in the School of Civil and Environmental
Engineering. In 2003 – 2004, he
holds an Australian Academy of Science
/ Japan Society for the Promotion of Science
Invitation Fellowship to study sustainable
transport policies and urban development.

Professor John Black has acted for over 25 years as high-level
consultant to international agencies, such as the World Bank
and the United Nations Development Program, Australian Commonwealth,
State and Local Government agencies, and to the private sector
and community groups. He specialises in stakeholder consultations
and project independent peer review.
Professor Black is
Chair of the Australian
Chapter of PACOM –
an international scientific
organisation of researchers
associated with marine
and coastal environments.
He is also a member,
International Steering
Committee of the World
Conference on Transport
Research Society (WCTRS),
and was a founder
member of its Air
Transport Research
Group. He holds membership
of advisory boards
of international journals
(Transportation Research
D: Transport and the
Environment and Transport
Planning and Technology)
